Elias Ayres Guidetti Zagatto, born in Piracicaba SP (1948), is an agronomist, master in agronomy, doctor in analytical chemistry and full professor. In 1969, he began his activities at the Center for Nuclear Energy in Agriculture of the University of São Paulo (CENA/USP). He completed specialization internships at the Institute of Atomic Energy (S. Paulo, 1973-74), at the Technical University of Denmark (1975-76) and at the Max-Planck Institute for Metals Research (Germany, 1981). In 1975, he participated in the initial development of flow injection analysis, whose acceptance is demonstrated in more than 35,000 scientific articles, as well as in books and book chapters, academic theses, congresses, patents, commercial flow analyzers, etc. His research activities have been focused on the conceptual, methodological and application development of flow analysis, with emphasis on agro-industrial, environmental and pharmaceutical samples. His scientific output is impressive: 232 published articles (7009 citations, h = 44), 4 books, 6 book chapters, 12 encyclopedia texts, 4 academic dissertations, 3 patents, etc. Prof. Zagatto has been an advisor or supervisor in undergraduate, master, doctoral and post-doctoral programs; a member of examination boards; a professor at undergraduate and graduate levels; a lecturer at seminars and conferences, etc. He has coordinated national and international research projects, been a member of event organizing committees, received visiting scientists and facilitated trips for Brazilian researchers. At CENA, he was a member of the deliberative council, vice-director, head of department, vice-president and president of the postgraduate committee and, at the USP campus in Piracicaba, he was vice-mayor and mayor. He was also head of the Analytical Chemistry Division of the Brazilian Chemical Society, and a member of: the chemistry and engineering advisory committee of CNPq; the Ethics Committee of UNIMEP; Chemistry Coordination of FAPESP; ABC Selection Committee; organizing committees of international events, etc. He was a national representative and full member of Commission V.1 of IUPAC; ad hoc consultant for science funding agencies and publishing houses. He was a member of the editorial boards of 10 scientific journals and of the Encyclopaedia of Analytical Science, Academic Press. He was editor of a special volume of the journal Molecules and associate editor of Braz. J. Anal. Chem. He received honors from the Portuguese Chemical Society and the Federation of European Chemical Societies, the Medal of Merit from the University of Warsaw, the Rheinboldt-Hauptmann Award from IQ/USP, the Governor of the State of São Paulo Award, the National Order of Scientific Merit Award, the motion of the Ethics Committee of UNIMEP, the IUPAC Award, the Medal of Honor for Science from the Japanese Association for Flow Analysis, the USIMINAS diploma, etc. He is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Sciences of the State of São Paulo, and is a fellow of the Chinese Core Academy of Sciences and Humanities. Prof. Zagatto has sought to improve ethical, moral and spiritual aspects among his collaborators, as well as to develop feelings of team spirit, intellectual freedom, creativity and, above all, friendship.
