Susana Durão is Professor of Anthropology at Unicamp/IFCH, fellow researcher at the Center for Public Policy Studies (NEPP), and CNPq productivity fellow. Previously, she was a researcher at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon (ICS-UL). Recently, Durão was a senior visiting researcher at Mecila: Maria Sibylla Merian Center for Coexistence and Inequality in Latin America at the Global South Studies Center (CEBRAP, São Paulo) and visiting fellow at the University of Cologne. Currently, Durão coordinates the research project Magüta: Justice, Security, and Violence in Alto Solimões, Amazonia associated with the university-supported Extension Program (ProEEC, NEPP, NEPO, PAGU, IFCH). Durão was a judge for the 2025 Jabuti Academic Award. She has conducted research on police work and public security policies in indigenous communities under an international project at the University of Toronto. She has extensive work on public and private security, public security policies, and plural policing from an anthropological and ethnographic perspective. She has done fieldwork in regions of Portugal, Africa, and Brazil. Durão has held a position of trust at the Provost's Office for several years as general coordinator of Unicamp's Secretariat for Campus Life (SVC), the body responsible for creating and developing a preventive and unarmed university community security model.
