Investigator class 1A, CNPq (Brazilian National Research Council). Investigator of the INCT for Investigation in Immunology.MD degree, University of Brasília (1988) and PhD on Immunology, University of São Paulo (1994). Visiting researcher in Stanford University (USA, 1991), Harvard University (USA, 2002), Istituto Roche Milano Ricerche, Italy (1996) and Aix-Marseille Université/INSERM, France ( 2012, 2017). He has experience in translational research on cellular and molecular immunology and immunopathology of human disease, focussing on the following subjects:Chagas disease, chronic Chagas disease cardiomyopathy, vaccine discovery, HIV. Recent emphasis has been on the role of mitochondrial damage, inflammation and genetics, as well as novel treatments for Chagas disease, and identification of biomarkers and vaccine development for COVID-19. In August 2021 he had 149 publications in peer-reviewed, indexed journals. The publications had been cited 4754 times, with an h index of 38 (ISI/WoS). One patent on an HIV vaccine was granted by USPTO and EPO (US and European Community) and pending in INPI (Brazil).
