He has experience in translational research on cellular and molecular immunology and immunopathology of human disease, focussing on the following subjects:Chagas disease, chronic Chagas disease cardiomyopathy, vaccine discovery, HIV, COVID-19. Recent emphasis has been on the role of mitochondrial damage, inflammation and genetics, as well as novel treatments for Chagas disease, and identification of biomarkers and vaccine development for COVID-19. In May 2026 I had 221 publications in peer-reviewed, indexed journals ( Scopus). The publications had been cited 8,186 times, with an h index of 50 (Scopus). Edecio Cunha-Neto an inventor of a patent on an HIV epitope-based vaccine, deposited in the USPTO and EPO, and a co-inventor of a nasal COVID-19 vaccine under review at INPI, USPTO, EPO. He has mentored 17 post-doctoral fellows, 16 PhD students, 15 M.Sci. students, and 30 undergraduate students. One patent on an HIV vaccine was granted by USPTO and EPO (US and European Community) and pending in INPI (Brazil).
