Abstract

The genus Gochnatia (Asteraceae) comprises 70 species that occur mainly in America, from Mexico to Argentine. The chemical composition and specific pharmacological activities of these species have been poorly investigated. This study aimed to investigate the in vitro antiprotozoal and antihelmintic activities of the hydroalcoholic extract, fractions, and compounds of Gochnatia pulchra. The hexanic fraction (111) and apigenin (APG) showed moderate activity against the promastigote forms of Leishmania amazonensis, with IC50 values of 1205 +/- 6.4 and 50.02 +/- 1.4 mu g/mL, respectively. Against adult Schistosoma mansoni worms, the hydroalcoholic extract (HEGP) and the dichloromethane fraction (DF) displayed moderate activity. HEGP at 100 mu g/mL killed 100% of adult worms within 24 h, whereas DF at 50 mu g/mL and 100 mu g/mL killed 100% of of adult worms within 48 h and 24 h, respectively. All the other evaluated fractions and isolated compounds did not exert any effects on adult S. mansoni worms. This is the first report on the activity of plants belonging to the genus Gochnatia, and the present data have shown that exploring the biological activities of species of this genus is extremely important.
