Feedback congruence affects real and perceived performance of an affective neurofeedback task

Abstract

Neurofeedback has received growing attention due to its potential to relieve symptoms of psychiatric disorders. However, the neurocognitive mechanisms involved in self-regulating neurofeedback learning remain unclear. Herein, we investigate how the congruence of feedback to the participant neural activity interferes in this learning stage. For this, 31 subjects were trained in an affective neurofeedback task, and their perceived (self-rated) and real (based on neural data) performances were evaluated after each trial. A significant difference between congruent and incongruent trials was found in perceived performance across subjects (p << 0.01). Also, self-reported scores during congruent trials were significantly correlated with the real performance in the current (r=0.74, p << 0.01) and subsequent trials (r=0.54, p<0.01). These results indicate that reduced control beliefs may impair the creation and optimization of strategies during the learning stages. (AU)
