Abstract

ABSTRACT The new historiography of the end of the 20th century makes us take a different look at the Enlightenment, at its plurality and nuances, and also raises new questions about ways of life, practices and their agents in different social contexts. Regarding the history of books and reading, both Robert Darnton and Roger Chartier are renowned historians, with whom we propose to dialogue in this article, through a bibliographical analysis methodology. Taking 18th century France as a focus, we intend to think about the theme of reading as a political act, more specifically the role of printed matter circulation and reading practices in the development of political and critical thinking and in the shaping of public opinion.
