Abstract

Two new species of brachycephalid frogs are described from Pico Torre da Prata, between the Municipalities of Guaratuba and Paranaguá, and Pico Caratuva, Municipality of Campina Grande do Sul, State of Paraná, southern Brazil. The new species share the following attributes: body bufoniform; skin on dorsum of head and central body smooth, with no dermal co-ossification; outer metatarsal tubercle distinct; dermal roofing bones of skull unornamented; all paired cranial bones distinct, not fused; quadratojugals, neopalatines, and maxillary odontoids present. The new species from Pico Torre da Prata, Brachycephalus izecksohni sp.nov., is characterized by male SVL=10.3-12.1mm and female SVL=12.5-13.1mm; general colour orange; snout rounded in dorsal view; and absence of external trace of toe V. The new species from Pico Caratuva, Brachycephalus brunneus sp.nov., is characterized by male SVL=9.3-11.3mm and female SVL=10.9-12.0mm; general colour brown; snout mucronate in dorsal view; and presence of external trace of toe V. Comparisons with other brachycephalid species are provided. (AU)
