Abstract

The research proposes to study the emigration of Chinese by the port of Macao and Africans of Mozambique from the mid-nineteenth century to the tropical plantation areas as a complementation or substitution of slave labor, in the perspective of the transoceanic trade of indentured labor. The engagement of these workers was directly related to the intensification of demand for low-cost labor in the commodity producing regions under the aegis of world trade growth. The central hypothesis considers that the two possessions corresponded to a specific part of the Portuguese empire that inserted itself peripherally, fulfilling function within the international division of labor in the capitalist world economy as supplier of work force.
