Abstract

In recent decades, alcoholism in women has attracted the attention of medical and health authorities in Brazilian society. In this context, we highlight the presence of Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.), a therapeutic model aimed at the individual recovery of its members that have become dependent on alcohol, and within which some women find the possibility of treatment and control of alcoholism. The aim of this research is to understand the role and limits of the A.A. model, based on how women experience and explain the treatment of alcoholism in women, conceived as a "gender disease". This study will be developed through qualitative research, with an ethnographic approach, with A.A. women located in the city of São Paulo. Our hypothesis is that gender relations, which asymmetrically define representations of alcohol use and alcoholism among men and women in our society, directly affect the way in which women experience the experience of alcoholism within A.A. and thus define the process of adherence to the therapeutic model of A.A., the history of relapse, as well as the itinerary of seeking treatment in A.A. The aim is to contribute to the enrichment of the existing repertoire on the therapeutic model of A.A., its pros and cons in the treatment of female alcoholism, as well as to understand how alcoholic women conceive and experience treatment in A.A.
