Abstract

The Mata Atlântica, which has great biodiversity, is the second most threatened Brazilian biome and currently occupies more than 90% of the remaining forest area of São Paulo state. With high conservation priority for global biodiversity, this biome holds over 20,000 endemic plant species and 35% of Brazilian biodiversity. This vegetation occurs in small fragments and, therefore, is most often threatened by edge effect. Climate changes also represent irreversible risks to these areas as they can affect directly the occurrence and growth of endemic species. One of the difficulties for research and preservation actions in these fragments is the choice of reliable and easily applied methodologies in the generation of data on the behavior of native species under different ecological conditions and how they would behave with the change of this climatic scenario in a near future or far. The present project has the objective of diffusing two models of eco-physiological bases, 3-PG (Physiological Principles in Predicting Growth) and YieldSafe, developed by the CEF (Center for Forest Studies) of ISA (Instituto Superior de Agronomia) of Lisbon, Portugal and already adopted in European countries. Basically the models requires some inputs as: physiological parameters of tree species and crops, climate and soil data trace, after they give a panorama of growth of these species and crop productivity in the scenario evaluated. With this in addition the outputs are related to species growth, carbon, biomass and production, and their correlation to edaphic and climate changes data. To archieve the objetives of the project, two technical training meetings will be held and finally dissemination actions will happen in the final part of the project. Always aiming to increase the biodiversity and connectivity of areas of native vegetation of Atlantic forest some species will be chosen and agricultural production systems also involving crops, aiming at carbon stock measurement, promotion of sustainable management of the forest landscape , ecological restoration of native forests and promotion of the natural regeneration of watersheds of Paraíba do Sul. After the determination of the species in the first training module will be determined their physiological parameters and soil and climate parameters for the region of the study. The second training course of the technical team of the project will transfer the knowledge necessary to run the two mathematical models based on previously generated physiological and edaphic indexes. This action will enable the prospection of the growth potential of trees and crops in different climatic scenarios and generate current carbon and productivity data in the region. Finally, scientific and technical publications will be prepared for the dissemination phase of the project. The dissemination phase will be implemented also with meetings with the community of producers to establish planting targets with different systems, including, as a priority, the evaluated species. This phase will be carried out in partnership with CATI and OCIPs (which already have activities in the Paraíba do Sul Hydrographic Basin, a priority area of the project).Participation in national and international events related to the project activities is also foreseen.
