Abstract

This project represents a collaboration bringing together the complementary skills of three aquatic researchers working in distinct disciplines: Hugo Sarmento (FAPESP PI) microbial ecology; Dan Perkins (DP, prospective visitor) food web ecology and Victor Saito (FAPESP Co-I) community ecology. The application was initiated during a British Council - FAPESC funded workshop (RLWK8-10592) "Comparing the supply of ecosystem services between temperate and (sub)tropical freshwater systems" in Florianopolis, Brazil attended by HS, DP and VS in January 2019. During this 5-day workshop, we quickly realised that through our different areas of expertise, but a common scientific outlook, we were in a strong position to test hypotheses related to climate driven differences in the structure and dynamics of freshwater communities. This application is the result of those discussions. In essence, using data held by VS we tested some of these hypotheses and realised that we would need data from sampling regimes in streams that have a food web focus, such as the data held by DP (multiple streams in the UK). During the proposed 1-month exchange, we propose to further start matching the UK data with sampling in Brazil, enabling us to test our hypotheses more rigorously. (AU)
