High performance electrodes applied in organic batteries and in biofuel cell

Abstract

Carbon electrodes are used in most configurations of biofuels (BC) and organic batteries (OB) because they are stable and have low electrical resistance, leading to a considerable chemical and electrochemical long-term-stability. However, for both BC and OB, the structural heterogeneities of the surface and the presence of defects influence the electron transfer kinetics. In this project, we propose to improve our knowledge in the interfacial electrochemistry of carbon-based materials in order to develop electrodes with high performance applied in OB and BC. For this, simple surfaces such as single sheets of graphene and more complex surfaces such as surfaces of graphite turbostratic structures on flexible carbon fibers will be used as electrodes configurations. Both enzymatic reactions - such as bilirubin oxidase - and organic reactions involving quinones-based molecules will be evaluated. We will use some operando and in situ techniques developed in our group to understand the electron transfer mechanisms. (AU)
