Children learning in the 3rd and 4th grades of elementary school and social and emotional skills

Abstract

Although important advances have occurred in basic education in Brazil, the country still faces learning problems. Therefore, the first goal of this project is to make a diagnosis of the children's learning and to identify which factors are determinant for the learning in the initial years, 3rd and 4th years of elementary school. Factors related to socioeconomic characteristics, socioemotional skills and the school context, will be investigated. Another point being analyzed is whether the fact that the child has or has not attended a child education contributes to its performance. The second objective is to investigate issues that may enhance or mitigate the BNCC's implementation in the classroom, such as its acceptance, knowledge, participation and expectation in elementary school teachers in the 3rd and 4th grades in relation to BNCC. To achieve these objectives, the project proposal is to collect information in Languages and Mathematics, socioemotional skills and information about the school and socioeconomic context in Ribeirão Preto (state, municipal and private). Questionnaires will also be applied to the teachers of these students. These questionnaires will aim to capture teachers' expectations on student learning and their mindsets, BNCC knowledge and new curricula, and key teacher needs for the implementation of new curricula.
