Digital farming technology adoption and technical efficiency in agricultural production of farms in the State of São Paulo

Abstract

This research project has four complementary aims: (i) identify and describe the main Digital Farming technologies adopted by soybean and beef cattle farmers in the state of São Paulo; (ii) identify the determinants of Digital Farming technologies adoption by farmers; (iii) estimate the impacts of Digital Farming technologies on technical efficiency and technological gap of soybeans and beef cattle farms of São Paulo state; (iv) analyze the impacts of possible synergies in Digital Farming technologies adoption on farms' performance. Primary data from one crop year of beef cattle and soybean farms will be used to perform the analyses (cross-sectional survey). Data from a sample of 130 cattle farms will be collected in collaboration with a private company. Data from a sample of 163 soybean farms will be collected by researchers and students of the project in field research. Structured questionnaires will be applied for data collection. The methodological strategy for data analysis is divided into three stages. In the first one, econometric models of qualitative choice will be estimated to identify the determining factors of Digital Farming technologies adoption decisions by farmers. Selectivity correction models for stochastic production frontiers will be estimated in the second stage. These models allow the calculation and analysis of technical efficiency scores for farms that adopt and not adopt the analyzed technology. The third step consists in estimations of production metafrontiers to properly analyze the impacts of Digital Farming technology adoption on technological and managerial farms' performances. The proposed analyzes will be done separately with data of beef cattle and soybean farms. Thus, it will be possible to analyze the impacts of Digital Farming technologies on these two agricultural activities. The results of the project will contribute to resource allocation decisions of farmers, as well as to diffusion of Digital Farming technologies and formulation of public policies for agribusiness in the state of São Paulo.
