Abstract

NASA has considered the fossil record as important evidence of extraterrestrial life, to be investigated on planets like Mars. In this context, technical and conceptual updates in paleobiology, engineering and applied physics have shown direct implications not only for understanding the limits of Earth's biosphere, but also for planning missions aimed at detecting habitability contexts on other planets and moons. This project aims to: (1) reconstitute fossildiagenetic histories of geobiological, paleobiological, paleoecological and astrobiological interest; and (2) investigate new ways and possibilities for characterizing samples and detecting information, as well as compiling, processing and making available data on organic matter, minerals and other important geological materials for the study of biosignatures. The biggest challenge of this project will be to illuminate the processes behind the geobiological patterns preserved in the fossil record. We will consider a wide spectrum of fossil samples and geological units, from the Precambrian to the Quaternary. We will invest in the use of rigorous analytical protocols through spectroscopic and spectrometric techniques, in addition to imaging. The following will be observed: (1) standardization of sample processing (lamination, polishing, comminution, etc.) for analysis; and (2) the test of ideal analytical parameters, considering technical limitations, potentialities and complementarity. Tutorials, protocols and parameters used, as well as data obtained in this project will be made available in databases and repositories for consultations and comparative studies for research institutes, museums and space agencies (AU)
