Aging-related neurodegenerative disorders: from the cell to the patient

Abstract

The incidence of several diseases increases with aging, due to several changes that include genetic, epigenetic, organic and systemic factors, among others. This picture is very evident in the nervous system, a target of several pathological processes linked to aging. In the present proposal, we aim to study several aspects related mainly to the two most prevalent neurodegenerative diseases, namely Parkinson´s disease and Alzheimer´s disease. The focus of the research is the integrated construction of knowledge that produces a significant contribution mainly on the progression of those diseases and, at the same time, that enables the development of potential strategies to mitigate the neurodegenerative processes involved. In summary, we will develop an integrated and wide study, including cell culture models, animal models and neuroimaging, and reaching the patients, in the search for biomarkers that could reliably be used in the clinical practice. With this project, we sought to increment both the basic and translational research on those two neurodegenerative conditions in our area. The integrative approach, which is the main novelty of the proposal, may lead our groups to international standards of research in this field. (AU)
