Wh constructions in the Portuguese spoken in Cape Verde islands
Abstract
This project puts together and integrates a set of investigations on the history of Brazilian paulista Portuguese, aiming to study the formation of its linguistic varieties, paired with the formation of São Paulo society. The following areas and problems are studied: 1) Grammar and language changes; a) generative Linguistics and language changes: pronouns and prepositions; the syntax of caipira dialect; b) functionalist Linguistics and language changes: toward a multissystemic approach of prepositions, conjunctions and the sentence; c) comparisons between the paulista dialect and the Galician; 2) discourse and language variation: a) elicitation and study of the development of substandard dialect and its spreading over the territory since the 16 th century; b) elicitation and development of standard dialect; c) diachrony of text processes and discourse traditions; 3) lexicon and phonological change: lexical reconstruction of ancient Brazilian paulista Portuguese.
