Abstract

Alterations in the energetic metabolism associated with modifications in the offer of nutrients and oxygen, ionic transport, inhibition of components of the transport chain of electrons or increase in the production of reactive oxygen species can lead to cell death. This cell death caused by failures of the energetic metabolism is a possible cause of several disorders, including arteriosclerosis, cerebral stroke, methylmalonic acidemia and some neurodegenerative diseases. The compromising of the energetic metabolism also is an effective way of eliminating cancer cells or undesirable pathogenetic microorganisms. Our project aims to study specific mechanisms through which the energetic metabolism and the mitochondrial production of reactive oxygen species are regulated, and seeks to determine which molecular events associated with changes in the energetic metabolism, intracellular homeostasis of Ca2+ and production of species reactive to oxygen can lead to cell death.
