Abstract

The bacterial wilt, caused by Curtobacterium flaccumfaciens pv. flaccumfaciens, is the most important bacterial disease of the common bean in Brazil. This disease has been causing great damages to common bean in several localities, mainly when susceptible varieties and seeds infected by this pathogen are used. There is no information about the ecology of C. flaccumfaciens pv. flaccumfaciens survival in infected bean debris, in the soil, rhizosfere and the endophytic colonization of some plants. Field observations have been demonstrating the increase of the incidence of the disease when common bean was croped after oat. To explore these facts, the proposes of thise research are: the) to verify the survival of C. flaccumfaciens pv. flaccumfaciens in debris of diseased bean plants in the surface and buried to 20 cm in the soil; b) the effect of pre-cropping oat and wheat on the occurrence of bacterial wilt in common bean plants; c) to verify the endophytic and rhizosphere colonization of oat and wheat plants by C. flaccumfaciens pv. flaccumfaciens. The results of this research are of extreme importance for the knowledge of the ecology of this pathogen and could improve the disease management in the field. (AU)
