Production and quality of lamb meat fed with sunflower grains associated with vitamin E

Abstract

The work will be carried out at the Ovine Sector from the Animal Science Department of the FCAV/Unesp, Jaboticabal, SP. It will be used 32 male, not castrated He de France lambs. They will receive the following diets: D1 - sugarcane + concentrate without sunflower grains; D2 - sugarcane + concentrate with sunflower grains; D3 - sugarcane + concentrate without sunflower grains and 1000mg/vit.E/kg of dry matter (DM) of the diet; D4 - sugarcane + concentrate with sunflower grains and 1000mg/vit.E/kg of the DM of the diet. The sugarcane will be from the forage range IAC 86-2480 supplied in natura and the concentrate will be composed by triturated corn grains, soybean meal, urea, sodium chloride, limestone, dicalcium phosphate and both vitamin and mineral supplements, composing isonitrogenous and isoenergetic diets according to the NRC (2006), offered ad libitum at 8 a.m. and at 5 p.m. The animals will be slaughtered weighting 32kg, and evaluated in relation to the performance, quantitative aspects of the carcass and qualitative aspects of the meat, proximate composition, cholesterol, fatty acids profile and meat lipid oxidation (in natura, aged and processed). The concentration of α-tocopherol will be analyzed in the meat samples collected after the cooling in cold stores (4°C) for 24 hours. By 45 days from the beginning of the test performance, four ovines of each treatment will be kept in metabolism cages for total faeces and urine collection for further analysis of nutrients digestibility (DM, OM, CP, EE, NDF, ADF, TC and NFC) and nitrogen apparent balance.
