Bone mineral density and content in healthy female adolescents between 10 and 20 years old and their relationship with bone formation and reabsorption markers

Abstract

Osteoporosis is considered a serious public health problem and studies indicate it is a paediatric disease clinically manifesting in senility. Although these manifestations related to pictures of osteoporosis mainly occur in the elderly, their predisposition begins in infancy and adolescence, periods of maximum bone mineral capital increment. Therefore this study aims to evaluate some aspects of bone metabolism in female adolescents, together with indispensible knowledge for understanding them. For this 75 female adolescents will be recruited for the study of bone mineral content (BMC) and density (BMD) by bone densitometry using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA), related to the levels and behaviour of some bone remodelling biochemical markers such as: osteocalcin, bone alkaline phosphatase, and sCTX. These biochemical markers, BMC, and BMD will be analyzed in age bands within the 10 to 20 incomplete years and associated with anthropomorphic data (weight, height, BMI), dietary evaluation, sexual maturity, and bone age. Data will be processed by analysis of variance to compare all age groups and maturation levels against BMC and BMD, and the Tukey test to locate significant differences adopting p lower than 5%.
