Abstract

Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), especially those receiving renal replacement therapy, present high mortality rates, and cardiovascular diseases account for half the deaths of these patients. Traditional risk factors such as SAH, Diabetes mellitus, Obesity, Dyslipidemia, Age and a Sedentary Lifestyle associated with uremia and disturbances of the mineral metabolism resulting from uremia itself contribute to increase mortality from cardiovascular diseases in these patients. Recent studies have revealed that CKD Patients with adequate 25-OH vitamin D serum levels, as well as those treated with calcitriol and vitamin D analogs present lower mortality risk from cardiovascular diseases and all other causes. New findings about the role of FGF 23 in the regulation of phosphorus metabolism and the importance of this element in the mortality rates of CKD Patients have encouraged us to carry out this study. Therefore, we intend to simultaneously evaluate 25 OH Vitamin D and FGF- 23 levels in patients on hemodialysis and their correlation with survival. We will evaluate clinical characteristics, risk factors for kidney disease and cardiovascular disease, as well as laboratory tests, including FGF-23 and 25-OH Vitamin D serum levels in patients upon admission on hemodialysis, as well as mortality from all causes, including cardiovascular diseases, over a one-year period.
