Abstract

This project aims to analyze the harmful effects of particulate matter from sugar cane crops combustion over the respiratory and mastigatory systems in animal models (rats) , and its impact over the human morbidity and mortality rates in cardiopulmonary systems. The study will be divided in two phases. The experimantal study will work with animal models (Wistar rats) by evaluating the pulmonary morphometric development, upper and lower airways system histopathological demages, and the reduction in inflammatory response in oral cavity and pulmonary function by searching the following cytokines concentration in BALF and oral tissues maceration (GRO-±, IL-1², IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, IFN-³, IL-13, TNF-±), and cellularity. The epidemiological study will analyze the existence of a linear correlation between the increase in the particulate matter air concentration and the human rates of morbidity and mortality by pulmonary and cardiac problems quantified by the database of hospitalization and obituaries. Therefore it will be done an odds ratio statistical analysis between the harvest period and the non harvest period of sugar cane, in the population of Piracicaba city, São Paulo state, Brazil. (AU)
