Influence of thermal pain threshold in the occurrence of sensitivity in dental bleaching

Abstract

The present study will verify the occurrence of dental sensitivity in patients submitted to bleaching procedures using a 35% hydrogen peroxide (HP), considering physiological pain threshold. Thus, 60 volunteers will be divided into 4 study groups (n=15), according to their pain threshold (low and high) and bleaching treatment (HP and placebo). Physiological pain threshold will be determined using a neuro sensory analyzer, the TSA-II (Medoc Advanced Medical Systems, Durham, NC), that delivers thermal stimuli from a central unit with a thermode. Bleaching procedures using HP will be performed in groups I (low pain threshold) and II (high pain threshold). Thus, there will be three 15-minute applications, in a 7-day interval, during 3 weeks, totalizing three bleaching sessions for both groups. On the other hand, patients from group III (low pain threshold) and IV (high pain threshold), negative controls, will be submitted to a placebo product, identical to 35% HP. Dental sensitivity measurements will be performed in 16 different times: before dental bleaching, in the end of each product application, 1 and 24 hours after each bleaching session and 7 days after bleaching procedures. For this purpose, TSA-II will be attached to an intra-oral device, positioned in the buccal surface of the superior incisives. Phisiological pain threshold will be measured in the same study times. Obtained data will be statistically analysed in a 5% significance level. (AU)
