The practices of writing and the representations of reading: the discoursive construction of the Brazilian reader in the media

Abstract

In our research, we aim to reflect about the representations of reading produced by the writing of contemporary Brazilian media. The mass media represents today, more than ever, one of the central position of production and circulation of discourses. Considering this scenario, we aim to understand and analyze specifically the discourses about the reader and the reading that circulate in popular magazines and newspapers, printed and virtual, produced in the beginning of the XXI century in Brazil. If there were significant advances, in general, about the representations of readers (and reading) in press literary texts, we have not for the reader/reading of texts that circulate in other cultural objects. Moreover, given the emergence of new digital technologies of production and circulation of texts, it is necessary to investigate their impact on the writing practices of print media and reading practices as well. Therefore, based on a Discourse Analysis theory and principles of Cultural History, we aim to outline the profile of the "new reader", analyzing the writing strategies that have been employed in a corpus of texts from popular media.
