Evaluation of organic acids and probiotics as an alternative to antimicrobial additiveson performance parameters, intestinal microflora and challenge with Salmonella Enteritidis

Abstract

In order to evaluate alternatives to antimicrobials will be conducted two experiments, in Experiment I will evaluate the effectiveness of different products used as growth promoters, it will be used 420 commercial turkeys female were divided into four groups with five repetitions: diet basal, diet supplemented with zinc bacitracin; diet with probiotic and diet with organic acids during the growing period. The variables are evaluated: performance, intestinal morphology, measurement of pH in the crop and cecum, quantification of volatil fatty acids and quantification of the bacteria Lactobacillus spp., Clostridium spp., Bacteriodes spp. and the Enterobacteriaceae family. In Experiment II will aim to assess the effect of administration of organic acids, probiotics and antibiotics on the population of Lactobacillus spp. and enterobacterias, including elimination of Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) (challenge) in the crop and cecum of turkeys fasted pre-slaughter. It will also be evaluated external contamination of birds after challenge with SE in pre slaughter. This will be used 147 birds divided into seven groups of three repetitions: no challenge with SE, with SE challenge; organic acids in drinking water and SE; probiotic in drinking water and SE; probiotic in the feed and SE; organic acids in the feed and SE, zinc bacitracin in the feed and SE. Before slaughter, all birds will undergo 12 hours of fasting and water fasting for six hours. After the birds will be culled by cervical dislocation after collecting samples for microbiological analysis. (AU)
