Abstract

According to its intensity, ureteral obstruction may cause progressive anatomic and functional damage to the kidney. Urinary markers produced by the kidney or by its transitional epithelium are abnormally over expressed in the setting of renal damage, reflecting the gravity of urinary tract obstruction. Quantitative measure of these markers might allow the separation of patients with significant functional and anatomic urinary tract obstruction from those with non-obstructive dilatation of the urinary tract. In a rat model, seric and urinary markers (TGF ß1 and CA 19-9) will be evaluated after partial (unilateral vs bilateral) and complete surgically created ureteral obstruction. The aim of this study is to evaluate the use of these markers as indicators of significant urinary tract obstruction and subsequent renal damage, provided that low-cost and availability of these markers might help their incorporation in daily clinical assessment for initial evaluation of suspect urinary obstruction, during clinical follow-up of pediatric and adult hydronephrosis, and also in cases of moderated, intermittent or persistent post-surgical hydronephrosis.
