Relationship between maternal body composition, serum leptin and adiponectin and body composition of their neonates

Abstract

In 2009, cardiovascular diseases were responsible for 29% of all deaths in Brazil, exceeding the number of external causes and those caused by cancer. Obesity and increased fat mass, both independent risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, are responsible for number of metabolic abnormalities: hormonal disturbances, disorders of glucose and lipid metabolism and production of inflammatory molecules. Pregnancy, as well as obesity, are considered an atherogenic processes, characterized by disorders of glucose and lipid metabolism and hormonal changes. The products of obesity and metabolic changes induced by pregnancy may affect fetal development, possibly interfering in their body composition, and influencing the development of cardiovascular diseases in later life. Thus, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the relationship between maternal body composition, serum leptin and adiponectin and body composition of neonates in a sample of 200 mothers-newborns. The body composition of mothers and their newborns will be determined by segmented bioimpedance and air displacement plethysmography, respectively. Maternal serum leptin and adiponectin will be determined by ELISA. Descriptive statistics will be calculated for all variables considering the combination of pre-pregnancy weight and weight gain during pregnancy. The groups will be compared to identify statistical differences. Student T test will be calculated for interval data and nominal data will be calculated by X² test. To determine if weight and body composition of neonates differed according to pre pregnancy body mass index and maternal body composition, the covariance analysis (ANCOVA) will be conducted. Multiple linear regression analysis will determine which maternal factors are related to neonatal body composition. The tests will be significant for p <0.05. (AU)
