Abstract

An important model for studying aversive learning is the two-way active avoidance model in which the learning is evaluated by the number of avoidance responses that occur in anticipation of the aversive stimulus (footshock). An important data is that there is a substantial number of animals (around 20%) that do not learning this task. Those animals failed in avoidance the aversive stimulus and show freezing response instead of the avoidance behavior. Related to the neural pathways responsible for the elaboration of active avoidance, many authors suggest the amygdala, specially the lateral nucleus of amygdala, as an important structure for this kind of learning and the dopamine as the possible neurotransmitter. In this sense, the role of the project is to evaluate the role of dopaminergic transmission in the lateral nucleus of amygdala during the two-way active avoidance test. Followed by the evaluation of the role of dopaminergic agonists: quinpirole (D2 agonist) and SKF 38393 (D1 agonist) in the lateral nucleus of amygdala in poor performers and dopaminergic antangonists: SCH 23390 (D1 antagonist) and sulpiride (D2 antagonist) in good performers and, finally, we will evaluate the release of dopamine in the lateral nucleus of amygdala using microdyalisis during the two-way active avoidance test in poor and good performers.
