Geological evolution of the são Roque domain: a contribution from geochronology of the granitic magmatism and provenance of psammitic metasediments

Abstract

This project takes advantage of the availability of new techniques of in situ dating of zircon to offer a contribution to the geological evolution of the São Roque Domain, an important tectonic unit in southeast Brazil, located at the interface between the Mantiqueira and Tocantins Provinces, and whose age and geologic significance are still controversial. Mostly using material obtained by the proponents in their previous studies in the area, granitic plutons will be dated by Shrimp or LA-MC-ICPMS, aiming at the precise determination of the age and chronostratigraphy of the neoproterozoic granitic magmatism. Moreover, by dating inherited cores, it will be possible to evaluate the age and characteristics of the sources that generated this magmatism. In parallel, provenance studies of metapsammites (quartzites, metarenites anda metarkoses) will be perfomed, dating detrital zircon crystals; in such a way, upper limits for depositional ages of the sediments will be defined, as well as the possible existence of distinct metassedimentary sequences within the São Roque Domain will be evatuated. The provenance results will be integrated with previously obtained Sm-Nd isotope data in metapelites and metaconglomerates from the São Roque Domain (unpublished results from the proponents). (AU)
