Abstract

Oral mucositis is a co-morbidity that affects patients on antineoplasic treatment of head and neck. This disease is characterized by pain and ulceration of the mucosa and aggravates the course of treatment with chemotherapy or radiation, affecting the nutritional status of patients and interrupt cycles of anticancer treatments. The available treatments for oral mucositis are palliative and include local anesthesia, decontamination, cryotherapy and anti-inflammatory. The objective of this work is the technological development of hydrogels, in the form of particles and films mucoadhesives and drug controlled release. The hydrogels will be prepared with composition based on hyaluronic acid and other polymers compatible with the extracellular membrane. The drugs used are commonly used in dental products. The hydrogels are physically and chemically characterized and evaluated in vivo. This study opens the possibility of improving the quality of life of patients on anticancer treatment; carry out the protocols radiotherapy and chemotherapy, decrease treatment time and the risk of co-morbidity accompanying radiotherapy and chemotherapy. This study opens the possibility for further investigation of therapeutic products to prevent and treat others as mucositis of the pharynx and the vaginal cavity (AU)
