This publication has its origins in postdoctoral research financed by FAPESP and developed under supervision of architect and researcher Dr. Beatriz Mugayar Kühl, between July 2008 and July 2010. The book deals with the possibility of preserving the heritage of São Paulo Railway Company at Santos and Jundiaí by way of a multidisciplinary analysis, which allows maintaining particularities of its composition and of the chief structural elements of each one of the artifacts that make them up. The heritage of São Paulo first railway became greatly important as an industrial heritage. It encompasses meaningful items, which can still be preserved, although they face menaces due to utter ignorance of their importance and values and due to actions, which apparently aims its restoration but in fact are enacted aiming speculation and immediatism, detrimental to cultural values and rhetorical purposes that should prevail. These subjects are extremely complex and they demand a conceptual effort, which involves the participation of many sorts of professionals. It raises technical, critical and interpretative problems, but standing up to these demands is the only possible way to act in favors of São Paulo Railway's heritage with ethics and pertinence. (AU)
