Abstract

Several aspects related to snake phylogeny, age, sex, diet and other environmental conditions interfere with protein composition in snake venoms affecting the understanding of human envenomings and the efficacy of antivenoms. Thus, the accurate knowledge of venom composition may lead to scientifically based choices of antigens for antivenoms production, molecular markers for snake taxonomy and a better prediction of clinical symptoms and treatment of patients. In this project, we aim to approach venom variability in three different levels: 1) comparing the toxin and antigen composition of venoms from snakes of 6 different species of Bothrops recently reclassified in 3 new genera; 2) characterizing the individual variability of Bothrops atrox venom composition from different geographical areas and from sympatric populations; 3) evaluating the diversity of metalloproteinases in each venom and the eventual functional variation of these toxins in different physiological systems or animal models. The results obtained by these approaches will be analyzed in the light of biodiversity, trying to elucidate taxonomic and environmental characteristics with venom diversity, and in the public health, by correlating venom variability with physiopathology of the envenomings and by supporting the antigen choice for antivenoms production.
