Mathematical modeling of energy and protein utilization efficiency of feeds and foods by pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus Holmberg, 1887)

Abstract

The efficiency of energy and protein utilization of feeds and foods is an important factor in planning feedin strategies for fish farming. This project aims at developing models for predicting the eficiency of different process of energy and protein utilization in pacu, Piaractus mesopotamicus. In Trial 1 aims at developing models to estimate the digestibility coefficients of energy and protein and the digestible energy and protein content in commercial feeds for pacu, the explicatory variables being the physico-chemical characteristics of feeds. In Trial 2 will be defined the coefficients of factorial model of energy and protein requirements for pacu, corresponding to energy and protein requirements for maintenance and growth. The influence of lipid contents of feed on these coefficients will also be evaluated. Models to estimate body components (water, proteins, fats and ach) and body energy content as function of body weight will also be studied so enabling the application of a factorial model to define the energy and protein requirements in different body weight categories. Trial 3 will study, in semi-controlled conditions and using stable isotopes and mided models techniques, the contribution of carbon, protein and energy of natural productivity and feed. A finar trial will define the digestibility coefficients of energy and protein of natural productivity. (AU)
