Abstract

The appropriate inclusion of carbohydrate in diets for fish for the maximum utilization of dietary protein for growth represents an interesting tool for reducing production costs and nitrogen excretion. On one hand, some species of fish have limitations in the use of this component of the diet, in others, it is possible to observe an interesting protein-sparing effect of diet. In fish, the relative use of carbohydrates in the diet is linked to metabolism and peripheral utilization of this nutrient. In this sense, the pacu Piaractus mesopotamicus is an interesting biological model because its frugivorous feeding habits suggests physiological mechanisms adapted to the utilization of carbohydrates. Although some studies have been conducted with the use of carbohydrates by this species, the sparing effect of dietary protein by carbohydrate inclusion and physiological and biochemical mechanisms involved have not been fully studied, but might contribute greatly to the aquatic organisms feed industry in tropical environments. On this basis, this proposal aims at checking the overall protein-sparing effect through diets with suboptimal protein and increasing carbohydrates, using as a tool for assessing the performance, the efficiency in nutrient retention, the dynamics of tissue energy reserves, the profile of metabolites in blood and amylase and glucokinase activity.
