Abstract

As a food of animal origin, lyophilized bovine colostrum (LBC) may prove to be an innovative alternative when added as a source of protein and bioactive peptides in fish feeding. This study will evaluate the effects of lyophilized bovine colostrum on the histology of the intestinal epithelium of juvenile neotropical endemic species fishes, such as pacu and gold. Pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus Holmberg, 1887) and gold (Salminus brasiliensis Cuvier, 1816) fry will be distributed randomly in a 3x2x2 factorial design (12 fish per treatment in triplicate) corresponding to the experimental diets (control, 10 and 20% inclusion of LBC), the sampling dates (30 and 60 days after the beginning of the trial) and the feeding habits (omnivores and ichthyophagous). The animals will be fed twice a day until apparent satiation. On the sampling dates the intestine of seven animals will be collected and divided into medium intestine and rectum, the first subdivided into two segments, a cranial and other intermediary. These samples will be analyzed for histological features as well as partial volume of the absorptive mucosa, muscle layer thickness and quantification and differentiation of goblet cells. Additionally, the effect of IGF-I present in bovine colostrum will be evaluate on these characteristics of the intestinal epithelium.
