Abstract

The acceptance of personal care products for the consumer often depends on the perceived sensory properties during use. Descriptive analysis is a technique that was developed to quantify the properties of samples there between comparing the sensory profiles. This analyze first applied to foods had their application in cosmetic products began in 1970 with the article by Schwartz, NO-Adaptation of the sensory texture profile to skin care method (J Textture stud, 1974, 6 (1) 33-42. A descriptive analysis technique has become standard practice by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and was named as Skinfeel Standard Practice for Descriptive Analysis of Creams and Lotions (ASTM E1490-03). Are recommended methods for the selection and training of assessors, as well as standardization of terms used, references and other methods. As the standards of ASTM sensory analysis of the skin is divided into three main ratings: 1) Product Evaluation in petri dish; 2) Product rating applied between the toes (pick-up); 3) Evaluation of the product applied to the forearm (rub-out evaluation). The criteria applied depend on the characteristic of the cosmetic product to be evaluated, such as brightness, color, consistency, flow from the bottle, spreadability, emollient, moisturizing and others.
