Magnetic noise due to Kondo impurities in spintronic devices

Abstract

Conventional electronic devices based on charge currents are reaching their limit both in terms of miniaturization as well as energy dissipation. This realization has motivated research on spintronic devices that are based on the electron spin degree of freedom. Spintronic devices are more sensitive to environmental fluctuations, because, in addition to charge noise, they are also sensitive to magnetic or spin noise. Research on the magnetic noise affecting spintronic devices is still at its infancy, and has been a central theme of Prof. de Sousa's research group. Here we propose to investigate the magnetic noise problem due to a Kondo impurity. The dynamics of a Kondo impurity is a complicated many body problem, whose solution requires the use of the modem numerical renormalization-group method, a technique in which Prof. Dias is a world-class expert. This proposal aims to bring together this unique combination of skills to establish a strategic collaboration between Prof. de Sousa's group, specializing in spintronic devices, and Prof. Dias' group, specializing in the computational solution of many body problems. The outcome of this collaboration will be the solution of a timely and important problem. (AU)
