This research project aims at exploiting the Sensor Web approach for monitoring urban rivers. This fosters the construction of smart cities in Brazil. Sensor Web is a new technology that aims at making a wireless sensor netowks available on the Web (Internet). The central idea is to allow any Internet user to read the data from the sensors installed along urban rivers. Such data may be the pollution level as well as those used to predict the flooding. The river pollution data is read by conductivity sensors while of the flooding by analog pressure sensors. One of the aims is to use existing standards for this as the OGC (Open Geospatial Consortium) and conduct experiments; this can validate its viability. It is important to emphasize that this project aims to continue the work started with the Jovem Pesquisador FAPESP research call (2008/05346-4). During that project, we proposed a component-based middleware and implemented a prototype to detect floods in urban rivers. The result of the project was the subject of two articles in the Boletim Agência FAPESP in 2010 and 2011. Now, we intend to continue this research, investigating the use of Sensor Web approach to provide a smart city in the monitoring of urban rivers (floods and pollution). The impacts obtained during the term of the previous project were very promising. (AU)
