Abstract

This project aims to use supercritical CO2 technology (SC-CO2) to study the possible formation of micro and nanoparticles from natural products encapsulated in biopolymers. The subject is innovative in particular as regards the encapsulation of compounds highly soluble in supercritical CO2, since this technology has been used in the formation and impregnation of particles, especially solid solute, but has not been applied in the encapsulation volatile materials. Therefore, the innovative quality of this work is able to form stable emulsions of essential oils and dogfish liver oil, compounds highly soluble in supercritical CO2, in biopolymers before submitting them to the formation of micro-and nanoparticles. To certify that the capsules formed in emulsion not destabilize when subjected to the rapid expansion of supercritical fluid (RESS) process.Limonene (monoterpene) will be used in this study represents the essential oils which is easily acquired and also because the stability of emulsions used in the conventional processes which employ spray-drier using limonene is highly know. The dogfish liver oil was chosen representing the class of lipids, but mainly because it has high nutritional value. This oil is rich in squalene, a hydrocarbon compound with anticancer activity, antioxidant, radioprotective, immune system booster, among others. Squalene is easily oxidized in ambient conditions, and a way to prolong its useful life and consequently its beneficial effects is through microencapsulation technology in constant progress. Microencapsulation with supercritical fluids have been utilized to advantage for processing soft temperatures and reduced use of organic solvents when compared to conventional technique of spray-drier.Recent studies have demonstrated success and advantages of using this technology in the formation of nanoparticles, especially of drugs. If the proposed objectives are achieved in this work, the technology for encapsulation of volatile substances and lipids of natural origin will be undergoing a key innovation, since this process involves low temperatures, making it possible not to degradation of limonene and squalene thermosensitive compounds, making them more stable and secure. Still, compared to conventional processes for the formation of microcapsules (emulsion spray dried in hot air - spray-dryer), use of this technology could enable the formation of smaller particles in nanometer order.In this project, it is attention to employ polymers commonly used in industry "medicines and powdered flavouring" so they can take advantage of proven stability studies of these materials and still maintain the standard cost of the products as the use of polymers that are difficult to acquire and high price are not interesting to industrialization.
