Internal indicators as alternative to chromic oxide to determine apparent digestibility coefficients in Nile Tilapia


This research aims to evaluate internal indicators crude fiber, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, cellulose, lignin, hemicellulose and acid insoluble ash as alternative to chromic oxide (Cr2O3) in the determination of apparent digestibility coefficients (ADC) of dry matter (DM), energy and nutrients for Nile tilapia. Study I: Two practical diets, formulated to contain 268.1 g kg-1 digestible protein and 3036 kcal kg-1 of digestible energy, will be made. Chromic oxide (0.1%) will be added in both diets. The ADC of DM, energy and nutrients will be calculated based in the level of Cr2O3 content in diets and feces, and compared to other internal markers using the Dunnett's test (P < 0.05). Study II: In order to meet/ exceed the nutritional requirements of Nile tilapia, a reference diet, formulated with soybean meal as protein source, will be made. To obtain the test diets, the animal products (meat and bone meal, feather meal and fish meal), plant protein-rich products (cottonseed meal, peanut meal and soybean meal), and cereal grain products/ by-products (corn, rice bran and wheat bran) will be incorporated into the reference diet at a 7:3 ratio. Chromic oxide (0.1%) will be added and used as an external indicator. The ADC of dry matter, energy and nutrients of ingredients tested will be obtained by the difference in the level of internal indicators present in the diets and feces and compared to those obtained by the use of Cr2O3 by Dunnett's test (P < 0.05).
