Multimodal nursing intervention to reduce treatment-related cancer symptoms

Abstract

It is a randomized controlled trial with experimental and control group that will be developed at the Institute of Cancer of São Paulo State. It is estimated that the study will include 180 cancer patients in early stages of treatment, divided into two groups (experimental and control). The sample, however, will be calculated after performing a pilot study includes 30 patients in each group. Patients in both groups will be evaluated before the start of the study and reassessed at the end of the intervention with 3 months follow-up. The intervention aims to reduce common symptoms in patients being treated for cancer (pain, fatigue, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, anxiety, chronic sadness and disturbed sleep pattern) and improve the quality of life of these patients. Symptoms listed as object of intervention are also characterized as nursing diagnoses and therefore are amenable to nursing interventions. The intervention is considered multimodal because it includes two or more components that interact with each other. The main components of the intervention are education about the disease and symptom management, technical problem solving and relaxation techniques. The proposed multimodal nursing intervention was structured based on the classification of nursing interventions related to nursing diagnoses common in patients receiving chemotherapy. The intervention will be conducted in groups of 10 to 15 patients and applied by nurses, with the help of nursing students. (AU)
