Structural Studies and Characterization of Proteins by X-ray Crystallography and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. Structural investigations and biophysics of molecular mechanisms of functional proteins.

Abstract

This collaborative research project aims to express, characterize and determine the crystal structures of a number of enzymes. Crystallography provides accurate, static images of the three-dimensional structures of biological macromolecules at the atomic level that is unsurpassed by any other technique in its degree of detail and precision.Structural models help elucidate enzyme mechanisms and to comprehend complex biochemical processes inherent to life and biotechnology and to suggest structural modifications to inhibit the functioning of molecules that trigger or attenuate diseases and illnesses or to improve the performance of enzymes. The complimentary techniques of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance will be used to determine modes of binding and inhibition. (AU)
