Abstract

The course entitled "Fundamentals of Experimental Design and Sequential Simplex Optimization" will be given by Prof. Stanley Deming, retired from the University of Houston (Texas/USA) with 40 hours of duration, from 26/01 to 30/01 2016, at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences from USP. Prof. Stanley is president of the Statistical Design, a company that has been offering courses to various private institutions in different market areas over the last 30 years. The course will include topics on linear and nonlinear statistical models applied to experimental designs, essential conceptual definitions for quality assessment and decision making, spend on the fractional factorial designs options instead of full models according to each situation, discuss criteria for the choice of each type of design, present the optimization tools and their interface with the process control, describe the sequential model highlighting its difference to the simplex linear programming, and finally discuss desirability functions. All topics will be addressed in a reflective way, much more focused on understanding the concepts than calculations. For this reason the course assumes no previous statistical knowledge and does not use statistical softwares. The main objective will be to present the technics and interpret results, making students think about and discuss. Thus, it is expected to develop learner autonomy to apply the concepts and techniques as well as critical skills in further project evaluation. Both modules or will be addressed in this course have already been delivered to more than 100 companies and institutions such as: American Chemical Society, Novartis, Boehringer Ingelheim, Dupont-Dow, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Aventis, Swiftwater, Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research & Development, Procter & Gamble, Eastman Kodak Company, Rhone Poulenc Rohrer Pharmaceutical, Schering-Plough Drug Company, Dow Chemical Company, Glaxo Pharmaceuticals, Solar Energy Research Institute, AT & T Bell Laboratories, Eli Lilly and Company, Texaco, California State University, Sandoz Ltd, SmithKline Chemicals, Monsanto, Union Oil Company, Ford Motor Company, and Standard Oil Company Goodyear, among others.
