Social cognition and comparison of DSM-IV and DSM-5 dementia criteria among elderly attended in primary care

Abstract

Dementia is a clinical syndrome characterized by cognitive decline and functional impairment with significant impact on patient's and caregiver's quality of life. Recently, new criteria of dementia diagnosis were established by the American Psychiatric Association (DSM-5), beyond the reformulation of cognitive domains and the inclusion of social cognition, the syndrome was renamed major neurocognitive disorder. The main objective of the study is to evaluate the impact of changes in diagnostic criteria in the estimates of dementia prevalence. Neurocognitive tests will be applied to all individuals over 60 years living in the catchment area covered by a family health program of São Carlos-SP to determine the frequency of dementia diagnosis. In addition, the participants will be evaluated by a trained psychiatrist to determine the diagnosis of dementia/major neurocognitive disorder according to DSM-IV and DSM-5 criteria. (AU)
