Metaqua: metabolite/metabolomic profiling in aquaculture research with a view to maintaining food safety / security and animal / human health

Abstract

The METAQUA partnership will seek to form a new interdisciplinary collaborative partnership between Dr Mark Mooney (QUB, UK) and Dr Jonas Paschoal (USP, Brazil) using the complementary expertise and analytical capabilities available to these researchers to explore the potential of metabolite/metabolomic profiling to assess aquaculture responses to chemical exposure with a view to maintaining food safety/security and animal/human health. Metabolomics research focuses on the large scale and high-throughput profiling of small molecules (metabolites) in biological matrices using advanced mass spectrometry techniques. Due to the myriad of organs and metabolic pathways acted upon by exogenously administered agents, either through primary interaction or secondary metabolic effects, metabolomics has the capability to assess physiological and biological responses in animals following chemical exposure. This partnership will use researcher exchange missions to plan and develop a joint research programme to examine the chemical metabolite and biological metabolome responses to drug exposure in fish. The overall objective of METAQUA will be to frame the groundwork to prepare collaborative applications between QUB and USP to attract BBSRC-Brazil (FAPESP) funding of new aquaculture based research programmes. The proposed area for collaboration will seek to exploit the synergy between the BBSRC and FAPESP in a key strategic priority of both bodies i.e. "Agriculture and Food Security”. (AU)
