Abstract

This project aims at the development of hybrid materials consisting of a nanostructured polymeric matrix film with embedded well-defined metal nanoparticles (NPs). Here, a polymeric layer-by-layer structure encompassing self-healing and anti-corrosion properties will ensure protection of the metal NPs pre-formed by physical methods and deposited from the gas phase. Such materials are expected to be highly versatile with a number of easily adjustable parameters and have potential application in electronics, photonics, catalysis, energy conversion, tissue engineering, drug delivery and biosensing. For this a network for researchers with complementary competences in the fields of nanoparticle physic and nanostructured polymer thin films will be initiated in view of a following long-term collaboration for the in-depth study of the fundamental properties of polymer-embedded metal nanoparticles more focused on possible applications in (bio)sensors and fuel cells. The ultimate goal of this project is the implementation of such nanostructured materials in biosensor prototypes. (AU)
