Abstract

This SPRINT proposal aims to establish a new collaboration between research groups at UNC Charlotte (Reitzel, cnidarian venom characterization and comparative transcriptomics) and São Paulo State University (Stampar, evolution and life history of cnidarians) to obtain preliminary data and develop a joint proposal for the National Science Foundation to determine the evolution and expression of venom genes in two species of tube-dwelling anemones (Cnidaria, Anthozoa, Ceriantharia) endemic to Brazil. Results obtained through the proposed research will result in the first annotated transcriptomes for species in this group of Anthozoans and the first measures of the role of environmental variation in the expression of these critical genes. The joint proposal will be submitted to either the Division of Ocean Sciences or the Division of Environmental Biology's Dimensions of Biodiversity of the National Science Foundation. Both of these Divisions are supportive of international collaborative research. (AU)
