Hydro-MeteoOceanographic forecasts of the water flows and harbors (PreHvia): decision support tool for planning and logistics of the fluvial navigation

Abstract

The potential for waterway transport in Brazil is very large. This modal, is still little explored, however its use for cargo transport, given its competitive advantages (such as lower cost and environmental impacts, increased security and concentration loads) has increased. The forecast is to use this to modal cargo transport for the next decade is significantly increased; the estimation of the Federal Government aims to increase more than twice the current use. Thus, the waterways and Brazilian ports can play a key role in the development and integration of the country. In the northern region of Brazil water transport by the rivers of the Amazon basin has always been used by people. Because of the location and potential navigability of the region modal waterway has grown much also to transport cargo. Thus, this project aims to develop a support and logistics planning tool inland: PreHvia - Hydro-meteoceanográfica forecast of waterways and in ports. This project has the intention to start focusing on the Amazon region, especially the Tapajós-Amazon waterway and ports of Marajó Island Archipelago, but envisions expansion into other waterways and Brazilian ports. The development of the project will enable the advancement in the field of applied science interrelating: meteorology, hydrology, oceanography and environmental, with implementation; generating information to support the decision to the sectors of interest; numerical modeling prediction for the medium and long term, using statistical techniques for correction, generation and validation of forecasts per set for the north of the country. The development of hydrologic modeling for the region of the Tapajós waterway Amazons to predict flow and quotas, using forecasts for developed together. These models will have data assimilation method for system upgrade to the latest time. This project also aims to develop an area little explored in Brazil, providing information support to port logistics decision, with the development and validation of different ocean modeling for the Marajó archipelago region. The tool will be made available to customers via the web interface. This platform will be structured to provide as much information based on environmental variables that can assist in decision support in the areas of logistics and shipping. Based on the history and brand CLIMATEMPO, as well as the high competence of the research team in different areas of knowledge, we believe that this tool will be consolidated for the market. As a result we anticipate more informed companies resilient in the navigation area, minimizing the risks and economic losses. As scientific results is expected to develop new methodologies and advance environmental, meteorology, hydrology and oceanography to the Amazon region, as well as the submission of scientific papers in international journals indexed with the developments carried out during the project.
