Fruit and juice quality in the mandarins selection

Abstract

Citrus fruit for consumption as fresh fruit has been an excellent opportunity and alternative for the establishment of citrus growers in Brazil, mainly because fruits destined to fresh consumption have higher commercial value. Mandarin group of varieties, including common mandarin (Citrus reticulata), willow leaf mandarin (C. deliciosa) and several hybrids, such as tangors (C. reticulata x C. sinensis) and tangelo (C. reticulata x C. paradisi), constitute the main group of Citrus in which the fruits are destined to fresh fruit consumption, due to flavor and the easy peel removal.Diseases such as brown spot alternaria (BSA), huanglongbing (HLB), black spot, citrus canker, among others, limit the cultivation of main citrus varieties. Among citrus commercial, mandarins have high genotypic and phenotypic variability. As a result of the Breeding Program of the Centro de Citricultura 'Sylvio Moreira'/IAC, dozens of new hybrids with phenotypic characteristics similar to mandarins have been developed and are being evaluated, in comparison with commercial varieties, in an experimentation network called 'Citricultura Nota 10', with a great participation of citrus growers. Thus, in this project, it is proposed to evaluate phytotechnical characteristics, disease resistance, physicochemical quality of fruit and juice, essential oils content and quality, sensory analysis of juice of mandarin varieties (including Ponkans´ like) and tangors. We are also trying to select new mandarin varieties that allow the expansion of harvest period of varieties destined to fresh fruit market. Experiments with different rootstocks and different locations in the States will be the basis for such assessments. SSR markers will be used to genotype all varieties under study, providing subsidies for genetic certification and protection. (AU)
